About 'costing systems'|Britain’s National Health System Hospitals: Cost Overruns Make Pentagon Look Miserly
Depending on whom you vote for in the 2008 Presidential Election, there could be some refreshing new options for long-term care in the future. If you think this topic is only for people over 50, think again. According to a December 2007 article in the AARP Bulletin, more than 30 million American adults are caring for elderly loved ones at home, costing the younger generation a whopping $350 billion per year. As the AARP article points out, some of the 2008 Presidential candidates have first hand experience with caring for their elderly parents at home. This raises the important question: Who will do anything about the pathetic state of the long-term care crisis in our country? The long-term care decision facing many Americans, whether the caregiver or care receiver, is never an easy decision. There are some shocking truths behind America's long-term care industry that reveal corporate greed, corrupt politics, deceit, fraud, and shamefully lax laws and judicial consequences for substandard care. Michael Wynne has been studying the long-term care industry since 1996. He has compiled a comprehensive history of the truths behind the long-term care industry. In his Nursing Homes Update 2001-2003 section, you will learn which large companies that operate nursing homes are paying Washington NOT to care. Wynne also gives a horrid history of how some nursing home staff members are treated who migrated here from other countries. Find out why it is important to know: * If the nursing home is for-profit or non-profit. Stunning statistics reveal a huge difference between the levels of care received. * How many Medicare and Medicaid beds there are as a ratio of total beds. Shocking statistics and business models of for-profit homes reveal the difference between care and coffin. The Bush administration wanted to lessen the regulation of nursing homes and allow for self-reporting of care indicators. This met with stiff opposition from Congress. Bush believed that if consumers knew more information nursing homes, they would force nursing homes to be more competitive, thereby providing better care. In 2002, the government began releasing data on nursing homes that are Medicare and Medicaid certified, but it has not fixed the problems. The real problems of long-term care facilities lie far beneath the surface of the performance records. Americans continue to be outraged at having to place loved ones in facilities where the coffin rather than the care is the end result. As a result, more Americans are turning to other long-term care options like fraternity-sponsored care facilities, more affordable home health care and nursing homes in Mexico, and assistance for elder care at home. If you or your children are discussing a decision about long-term care options, consider these resources for more information.
